WINTER ROAD TO LAC BROCHET
PART TWO
NOVEMBER 2009
WE CONTINUED TO TRAVEL THE WINTER ROAD IN THE DARKNESS UNTIL WE GOT TIRED WHICH HAPPEN TO BE AROUND FIVE IN THE MORNING. AFTER A COUPLE OF HOURS SLEEP AND THE SUN WAS UP, IT WAS BACK TO DRIVING THE NEVER ENDING ROAD MADE OF WHITE SNOW.
THE "SCREAMING FORD" LOOKS PRETTY GOOD FOR BEING 35 YEARS OLD AND MAKING A LIVING IN THE GREAT WHITE NORTH.
THE FARTHER NORTH WE HEAD THE TREES GET SMALLER AND THE ROCKS GET BIGGER.
WE ARRIVE IN LAC BROCHET AROUND 9aM ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT NOTHING GETS GOING UNTILL AROUND NOON. OH WELL! WE USE THE TIME TO SLEEP AND RELAX AND GET READY FOR THE TRIP BACK OVER THE WINTER ROAD.
VINCENT GOT TO MAKE HOUSE TO HOUSE DELIVERIES WITH HIS LOAD OF FREIGHT WHICH WORK OUT GOOD BECAUSE HE IS A BETTER TRUCK DRIVER THEN I AM.
THIS FENCE MUST HAVE TAKEN A WHILE TO BUILD WITH TOOTHPICK TREES OF THE GREAT WHITE NORTH.
ON THE WHOLE TRIP THIS IS THE ONLY TIME VINCENT WAS BEHIND ME SO I HAD TO TAKE A PICTURE.
THEN I GET TO FOLLOW HIM BACK OVER THE WINTER ROAD AFTER SIX HOURS OF UNLOADING.
HERE WE ARE MAKING GOOD TIME BECAUSE WE ARE EMPTY AND HEADING HOME.
MORE OF THOSE BIG ROCKS IN THE MIDDLE OF NO WHERE.
AS THE DAYS WARM UP, THE WINTER ROAD IS SLOWLY MELTING AWAY.
THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE PICTURES OF THE WHOLE TRIP. WE ARE TRAVELING ACROSS AND ICE FIELD WHICH HAS WATER FLOWING UNDER NEATH. THE HOLE IS ABOUT 4 FEET DEEP AND IS GETTING BIGGER AND BIGGER. THE CAMERA DOESN'T SHOW HOW BIG OR DEEP IT IS.
THE NIGHT BEFORE, THIS WATER HOLE SLOWED US DOWN BECAUSE IT WAS SO DEEP. TODAY BECAUSE THE TRUCKS ARE EMPTY, IT WAS A WALK IN THE PARK.
WE STOP FOR A QUICK SUPPER AS IT STARTS TO GET DARK. ONCE AGAIN THERE IS NO PICTURES AFTER THIS BECAUSE THE CAMERA CAN'T SEE IN THE DARK, LOL.
WE DROVE UNTIL MIDNIGHT AND VINCENT SAID HE WOULD SET HIS ALARM CLOCK SO WE WOULD ONLY HAVE A COUPLE OF HOURS SLEEP. WHEN I WOKE UP IT WAS DAYLIGHT AND I WOKE VINCENT UP TO TELL HIM ALARM CLOCK IS NOT WORKING. SO OUR CAT NAP TURNED OUT TO BE 7 HOURS OF GOOD SLEEPING. OH WELL, LOL.
THE WINTER ROAD HAS CHANGED A BIT IN THE LAST 24 HOURS SINCE WE HAD TRAVELED OVER THIS SPOT. IT LOOKED A LOT BETTER IN THE DARK THE NIGHT BEFORE.
ONE OF THE HAZARDS OF THE WINTER IS THE CARIBOU THAT RUN ON THE ROAD.
OF COURSE YOU ALWAYS HAVE ONE IN THE HERD THAT IS NOT VERY BRIGHT AND MISSED THE TURN OFF WHERE THE REST EXITED THE ROAD.
WE STOPPED FOR BREAKFAST AND VINCENT MADE COFFEE THAT YOUR SPOON WOULD STAND STRAIGHT UP. HE SAID IT WAS TO WAKE US UP FOR THE LAST STRETCH OF THE WINTER ROAD.
FOR SOME REASON THE SUN SEEMS EXTRA BRIGHT TODAY OR IT COULD BE ALL THE WHITE SNOW.
THE WATER HOLES ARE NOT MUCH FUN WHEN THE TRUCKS ARE EMPTY.
WE ARRIVE AT THE START OF THE WINTER ROAD WITHOUT ANY MAJOR PROBLEMS.
AFTER WE TAKE THE TIRE CHAINS OFF SO WE CAN TRAVEL ON THE "KINOOSAO RALLY ROAD". IT IS BACK TO LYNN LAKE AFTER 3 DAYS OF FUN AS WE CALL IT.
