FLOODING MY MUSKEG
JANUARY 2016
ON JAN 05 2016, I TOOK MY 1939 CHEVY AND HEADED BEHIND THE "KINGDOM" TO DO A LITTLE WATER FLOODING ON MY WINTER ROAD - CAT TRAIN TRAIL. THE 39 CHEVY IS GREAT TO DRIVE ON THIS NARROW ROAD BECAUSE THE TRUCK IT'S SELF IS SO NARROW TOO.
DRIVING ACROSS THE SWAMP HEADING NORTH TO TURN AROUND AND COME BACK TO START WORKING.
I'M NOW TURNED AROUND AND HEADING SOUTH BACK TO THE SWAMP. AT THIS TIME OF THE YEAR THE SUN IS IN THE SOUTH.
THE WINTER ROAD IS NICE AND SMOOTH WHICH ALLOWS ME TO DRIVE THE 39 CHEVY IN SECOND GEAR.
IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE OVER A WEEK AGO I COULD NOT WALK ACROSS THIS SWAMP WITH OUT BREAKING THROUGH. NOW I'M DRIVING MY 39 CHEVY ACROSS WITH NO PROBLEMS.
THE SNOW HAS FIRMED UP NICELY FROM BEING PLOWED AND DRAGGED.
IT IS AN EXCELLANT FOR PLAYING WITH WATER BECAUSE IT IS ONLY -12C DURIING THE HEAT OF THE DAY.
ALL THE TOOLS THAT ARE NEEDED FOR THIS PROJECT TODAY.
ANYTHING WITH A MOTOR HAS TO STAY IN THE HEATED CAB UNTIL IT IS TO BE USED.
I DID NOT GET ANY PICTURES OF CHAINSAWING THE ICE BECAUSE YOU GET ONE CHANCE WITH A CHAINSAW. IF YOU SCREW UP THEN THE CHAINSAW IS FROZEN AND HAS TO BE THAWED OUT.
EVERYTHING IS ALL SET UP AND READY TO GO, ONCE THE PUMP IS STARTED IT DOES NOT GET SHUT OFF UNTIL THE PROJECT IS DONE.
THE PUMP IS SET ON PLYWOOD SO IT DOES NOT SHAKE ITSELF IN TO THE SNOW AND DISAPPEAR. THE GAS CAN IS READY FOR RE-FUELING ON THE GO PLUS IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG THE BLUE ANTIFREEZE IS THERE TO SAVE THE PUMP FROM FREEZING.
THE SUCTION LINE FOR THE PUMP IS IN A 5 GALLON PAIL DRILLED FULL OF HOLES BECAUSE I DON'T WANT SWAMP GRASS PLUGGING THE PUMP.
THIS IS THE START AT THE NORTH END OF THE SWAMP AND IT WILL BE A GOOD AFTERNOON TO GET THE SWAMP FLOODED.
JUST SOAK THE SNOW DOWN AND ADD MORE AND MORE WATER TO GET THE SWAMP TO FREEZE UP NICELY.
STARTING ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE SWAMP. THE 39 CHEVY IS PARKED ON GOOD GROUND SO IT DOES NOT GET FROZEN IN THE ICE, LOL.
THE WATER SPRAYING LOOKS GOOD IN THE COOL WEATHER BUT IS SMELLS LIKE A PIG BARN IN THE SOUTH. BRINGS BACK MEMORIES OF MY WASTED YOUTH GROWING UP IN THE SOUTH.
I WALKED OUT ON TO THE SWAMP TO GET THIS PICTURE SHOWING HOW THE WARM SWAMP IS MELTING THE SNOW FROM UNDERNEATH. THIS CAUSES THE SNOW TO DROP DOWN WHICH MEANS THE SWAMP IS NOT FROZEN.
OF COURSE AFTER I TOOK THE PICTURE I WALKED A LITTLE FARTHER TO GET A BETTER PICTURE BUT I BROKE THROUGH AND GOT A BOOT FULL OF WATER. THEN I TOOK THIS PICTURE TO SHOW HOW CLOSE I WAS TO MY WINTER ROAD. THE GROUND IS NOT FROZEN AND WILL NOT FREEZE UNTIL THE AREA IS WORKED TO MAKE IT FREEZE.
WHILE I WAS OUT GETTING A BOOT FULL OF WATER TO TAKE BACK TO THE KINGDOM", THE FLOODING WENT VERY WELL TOO.
NOW MY FOOT IS GETTING COLD BEING IN WATER SO I STRETCH OUT THE HOSE AND START GETTING EVERYTHING DRAINED.
THE SUCTION LINE IS FIRST TO BE PULLED AND DRAINED. THE ICE LOOKS THICK BUT IT IS TERRIBLE ICE WHICH I CALL "SLUR-PEE ICE" BECAUSE IT IS SOFT AND HAS NO STRENGTH. IF IT WAS NOT FLOATING ON WATER IT WOULD JUST CRUMMBLE BUT THE COLD WEATHER CAN MAKE IT STRONG WHEN NOT INSULATED BY A THICK LAYER OF SNOW.
THE PUMP IS DRAIN, THE BLUE ANTIFREEZE IS POURED IN THE PUMP SO IT DOES NOT FREEZE. EVEN DRAINING THE PUMP THERE IS ALWAYS WATER LEFT AND WILL FREEZE.
ALL THE HOSES HAVE BEEN DRAINED WHILE ROLLING THEM UP IN TO THE 39 CHEVY.
THE 39 CHEVY HAS TO GO BACK IN THE HEATED SHOP SO EVERYTHING CAN THAW OUT OVER NIGHT.
